Bedford school district won’t sell Hyndman campus

HYNDMAN, Pa. — The Bedford Area School District has rejected an offer by the HOPE for Hyndman Charter School to purchase the former campus of the Hyndman Middle-Senior High School and the Hyndman Londonderry Elementary School.

During the March meeting of the Bedford school board, HOPE attorney Brad Allison presented the board with an offer of $575,000 for the 40-acre campus. The offer was discussed at the board’s work session earlier this month, but according to Allan Sell, superintendent, the district does not plan to pursue the offer and he confirmed that it has been rejected. The Bedford board will take formal action on the offer at today’s public meeting.

HOPE is leasing the former high school and athletic fields for operations of the charter school from the Bedford district for $1 per year. The current agreement, which was made effective in May 2011, is for five years with a five-year automatic renewal.

HOPE was created more than two years ago in response to the Bedford district’s vote to close the Hyndman Middle-Senior High School, in 2011, and subsequently the elementary school at the conclusion of the 2011-2012 school year.

As HOPE continues to grow and add students to its rolls, school officials believe the purchase of the property would allow future growth for both the school and the community.

Angela Coughenour, president of the HOPE Board of Trustees, said the offer was based on a recent appraisal conducted by Meridian Bank.

“Ownership of the property would allow us to use the Hy-Lo Elementary building, which has been sitting empty since the end of the last school year. We would be able to put the building to good use for educating children and serving the community,” Coughenour explained.

Brigette Emerick, HOPE trustee vice president, said it is the belief of HOPE officials that this offer is advantageous to both the charter school and the Bedford district.

The HOPE for Hyndman Charter School will hold an election for board trustees in July. Interested individuals are asked to contact Angela Gibbner, board secretary, at 814-842-3918 by April 25.
