Live music takes center stage at 6th DelFest

CUMBERLAND — With more than 30 musical acts set to take the stage at the 6th annual DelFest this weekend, now might be a good time to let folks know about some of the bands that will headline this four-day music festival.

Trey Anastasio Band

In the past 12 months, Trey has toured the U.S. in three separate configurations: playing arenas with his bandmates in the Grammy-nominated, genre-busting band Phish, concert halls in a series of orchestral evenings conducted by the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Scott Dunn and intimate clubs with his septet, Trey Anastasio Band. He also found time to co-write the music for Hands On A Hardbody with Amanda Green (High Fidelity). Penned by Pulitzer Prize winner Doug Wright, the musical premiered at Southern California’s La Jolla Playhouse in May 2012 and opened on Broadway in March.

Old Crow Medicine Show

Old Crow Medicine Show got it’s start busking on street corners in New York state and in Canada, winning audiences along the way with its boundless energy and spirit. They eventually found themselves in Boone, N.C., where they caught the attention of folk icon Doc Watson while playing in front of a pharmacy. Nearly 15 years and four albums later, OCMS has secured their seat among the greats in the American tradition. The band’s classic single, “Wagon Wheel,” received the RIAA’s Gold certification for selling more than 500,000 copies.

Yonder Mountain String Band

For 15 years, this string quartet has been criss-crossing the country, touring incessantly. What would appear to be a traditional bluegrass quartet from the outside quickly becomes a genre-bending experience, which spans original acoustic music to choice covers ranging from Ozzy Osbourne to the Grateful Dead. Their sets at DelFest have become the stuff of legend.

The Masters of Bluegrass

(Del McCoury, Bobby Osborne, J.D. Crowe, Bobby Hicks, and Jerry McCoury)

Between them, the Masters of Bluegrass (MOB) can count four Bluegrass Hall of Famers, two Grand Ole Opry members and a lineage that reaches back to bluegrass music’s earliest days. Separately (and occasionally together), they’ve appeared on countless late night TV shows, at every major bluegrass venue and on prestigious music festival stages across the country and around the world. They have all built enduring careers by delighting new fans and thrilling long-timers alike with wit, warmth, virtuosity and enduring creativity.

Trampled by Turtles

An acoustic quintet from Duluth, Minn., Trampled by Turtles exist beyond the box of categorization. The band takes pieces of it all and plays from the heart. Call it alt-bluegrass, non-traditional string, indie-folk, rock-grass, punk-grass or anything else, they don’t care, just show up with an open mind and dancing shoes. They came from various rock bands and still play with that plugged-in intensity, only now with acoustic instruments and beautiful, high-lonesome vocal harmonies.

Carolina Chocolate Drops

Bursting onto the scene in 2010 with a Grammy-winning debut album, the Carolina Chocolate Drops have made a serious name for itself in a few short years. Starting with material culled from the Piedmont region of the Carolinas, the group sought to freshly interpret this work, not merely recreate it, highlighting the central role African-Americans played in shaping our nation’s popular music.

Leftover Salmon

The sound of Colorado’s legendary Leftover Salmon is unmistakable: fluid, loose-limbed and simultaneously rootsy and daring. Fusing an unrivaled improvisational fervor to a dizzying combination of bluegrass, Cajun, funk, Southern rock, boogie, Caribbean, Latin and jazz influences, the band has managed to hone their unique sound while constantly evolving over its nearly 25-year career. Amidst all of the styles and changes, one thing remains constant — Leftover Salmon brings the party wherever they play!
