CUMBERLAND — Western Marylanders were bracing for some of the coldest weather in years Monday as a polar air system began tightening its grip on the region.
The National Weather Service predicted a low Tuesday morning of 1 above in Cumberland. Combined with wind gusts up to 45 mph, the wind chill could be 20 below zero.
It will be worse in Garrett County, where an overnight low of 15 below was expected. Winds there may gust as much as 50 mph, putting the wind chill at 46 below zero.
Allegany and Garrett county public school systems announced schools would be closed Tuesday. Frostburg State University also will be shuttered Tuesday.
