Frostburg Elks Derby Days set for Thursday

FROSTBURG — The 37th annual Frostburg Elks Derby Day will feature 28 entries in Thursday’s event on Main Street in the heart of the Mountain City.

Defending champion in the Derby Day coaster car competition is Cross Ritchey, who was sponsored last year by Kenney Signs.

Dennis Wilson, race director, said the event will be staged from noon to 3 p.m. A parade will precede the event at 11:30 a.m. Spectators are urged to bring chairs.

Main Street businesses will be open during the event for sale of refreshments.

The annual event, sponsored by Frostburg Elks Lodge 470, enjoys the unwavering support of the city of Frostburg.

“The city of Frostburg supports the Derby Day event with our police department and street department,” said Frostburg City Administrator John Kirby.

“They provide traffic control, barricades and trash collection. The event itself is done by a group of dedicated volunteers from the Frostburg Elks. Without their efforts, there would be no Derby Day.”

Wilson said, “The Frostburg Elks is proud to host this event for the 37th year. It’s a community-wide celebration. We thank all the many volunteers, sponsors and competitors that make the event possible.”

Most of the coaster cars in the competition are constructed by parents of the car operators. Operators range from 9 to 14 years old.

Awards are presented to the top 10 finalists.

Numerous businesses from locations throughout the county sponsor the competitors.

Wilson said the event follows “yearlong planning and a series of meetings over the last few months to finalize the details.”

Anyone seeking further information about Derby Day may contact Derby Day Chairman James Meyers or Wilson at 301-689-6470.
