I-68 Crosstown Bridge project moving forward

CUMBERLAND — Crews are nearly finished working on the driving surface of the Interstate 68 Crosstown Bridge, which has included patching large sections of pothole-ridden concrete and repairing bridge joints.

Crews still have a day or two of work left on the westbound side and motorists will encounter right-lane closures Monday and Tuesday of next week, weather permitting, as crews finish up those last items.

Later in the project, motorists will also see lane closures on the interstate as crews install the new highway lighting, according to the State Highway Administration spokeswoman Heather Keels.

Meanwhile, below the bridge, cleaning, painting and repairs are continuing in sections.

Workers have about three more nights of blast-cleaning work to do over South Mechanic Street under temporary nighttime detours, officials said.

Over Canal Place and the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, crews are finishing painting the newly cleaned and repaired steel.

They hope to have those areas complete within the next few weeks, but the actual time required will depend on weather.

Workers have also started repairs to the concrete piers, or support columns, in two additional areas:

The far western section of the bridge, west of Wills Creek, and the section of the bridge between Queen City Drive and Centre Street. There are parking restrictions in both of those areas, which include prohibitions on parking behind the Greene Street businesses from the Parkview liquor store to Cumberland Optical.

This project also includes work on the state Route 51 (Industrial Boulevard) bridge over CSX and Canal Parkway. On that bridge, concrete repairs are complete. Motorists on Route 51 should anticipate lane closures starting in early to mid-July as crews begin work on the driving surface of that bridge.

Overall, more than a third of the work on the project is complete, according to the SHA.

“As always, we appreciate the patience of the motorists, business owners and others who live, work and park around these bridges. Please continue to use caution throughout this area, and especially on I-68 where we have active work zones now on two additional bridges in the Cumberland area, the Kelly Boulevard and Patterson Avenue bridges,” said Keels.
