Inmate gets 25 more years for 2012 death of cellmate

CUMBERLAND — An inmate of the North Branch Correctional Institution was sentenced Wednesday to 25 years in addition to the sentences he is already serving. The sentence stemmed from the strangulation death of his cellmate.

Wesley Curtis, 29, was convicted in Allegany County Circuit Court of second-degree murder in the death of 28-year-old Charles Richardson IV, a fellow inmate of the maximum-security correctional facility.

On the morning of Sept. 27, 2012, Richardson, who shared a cell with Curtis, was found dead in the cell.

The investigation determined that Curtis had strangled Richardson to death during the night.

The case was investigated by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit and the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorney Erich Bean. Curtis was represented by Michael Stankan of the Office of the Public Defender.

Richardson had been serving a life sentence for two murders in Columbia in 2007.

Curtis was sentenced to 50 years in 2009 for attempted second-degree murder and a handgun violation in Prince George’s County. He had 20 years added to his sentence in 2011 for a first-degree assault in prison.
