CUMBERLAND — A robbery late Sunday at Powell’s Grocery on state Route 36 in Lonaconing and an attempted armed robbery of the Cozy Inn on U.S. Route 220 in the Bel Air area are under investigation by the C3I Unit and allied police agencies.
At about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, a lone suspect entered Powell’s Grocery, approached the cashier with his hand in his pocket, as if he had a handgun, and demanded all the money in the cash register.
The cashier gave the suspect an undisclosed sum of cash before the suspect then fled the store in an unknown direction. No gun was actually displayed, police said.
The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office responded and with the assistance of a Maryland State Police K-9 team, a search of the area was conducted. The suspect was not located.
The suspect was described as a male wearing a brown Carhartt jacket, blue jeans and a black ski mask.
Saturday, at 11:20 p.m., the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Cozy Inn for a reported armed robbery that had just occurred.
Deputies spoke with the bartender on duty who was outside and saw two subjects walking through the parking lot of a business across the street. The bartender went back inside at that time.
The suspects entered the bar shortly afterwards when one suspect produced what was described as a small handgun and demanded all the money in the cash register. As the second suspect walked behind the bar to get the money, the bartender sprayed the suspect in the face with a can of pepper spray.
Both suspects then fled the business without obtaining any cash. They were last seen running back through the same parking lot where they were seen earlier.
A Maryland State Police K-9 team searched the area without locating the suspects.
Police said the first suspect was described as a white male with long brown hair and a tattoo on his hand. He was wearing overalls, white tennis shoes and a dark sweatshirt with the hood pulled up.
The second suspect was described as a white male, possibly bald, who was wearing dark jeans, dark shoes and a sweatshirt with the hood pulled up.
C3I is investigating both incidents.
