Keyser Primary opening doors to students Jan. 8

KEYSER, W.Va. — Elementary students will be moving into the new Keyser Primary School on Jan. 8, according to Steve Peer, associate superintendent and treasurer. The Mineral County Board of Education’s punch list is expected to be completed Friday and teachers are moving their instructional supplies into the building. The new building is already furnished, according to Peer.

The prekindergarten through fourth-grade students who are moving into the building won’t have school on Jan. 2, 3 and 6 because of the transition, according to Peer. All other elementary students in Mineral County will have school as scheduled.

“The contractors and subcontractors did a commendable job; it’s a beautiful facility,” said Peer.

Harbel Inc. of Cumberland was the general contractor for the $13.5 million primary school.

The building boasts 31 full-size classrooms, with general education, art and music, and two special education classrooms; five medium-size classrooms, which include two computer labs and three special education classrooms; and nine small instructional spaces for speech, special education, occupational therapy/physical therapy and Title I.

A Qualified Zone Academy Bonds agreement will fund $4 million of the $13.5 million project, with the remaining $8.8 million coming from the state’s School Board Authority and $1.2 million from the school system.

The move-in date for the school had been previously pushed back because of small hiccups along the way. There weren’t any contract issues regarding a move-in date, according to Peer.

Gina Spriggs, director of the Catamount Children’s Center, has requested to move into the pre-K/Head Start building that will be vacated when the students move into the new Keyser Primary School. The school board was set to discuss and possibly vote on Sprigg’s request during Tuesday’s meeting but the item was removed from the agenda.

The discussion of the pre-K/Head Start building was removed from the agenda because the board still needs to look into the federal guidelines in regards to transferring the building, according to Peer. The St. Francis building was secured through federal funding and because of that it carries stipulations on who can move in.
