OAKLAND — Three Oakland residents were sentenced recently in Garrett County Circuit Court after being convicted in driving under the influence cases.
Brandon William Roberson, 25, Swanton, pleaded guilty in the circuit court to driving while impaired by alcohol. Related charges were dismissed upon his plea.
Judge Jim Sherbin then sentenced Roberson to six months in the Garrett County Jail and suspended all but two weekends and placed him on probation. Fines and costs of $645 were assessed.
Roberson was charged by Garrett County sheriff’s deputies in December after his truck was stopped for speeding along Deep Creek Drive in McHenry. After making observations of Roberson’s condition and administering field sobriety tests, the deputy placed him under arrest.
Sarah Elizabeth Coddington, 24, Oakland, pleaded guilty in the Circuit Court to driving under the influence of drugs or of alcohol and drugs. Related charges were dismissed upon her plea.
Judge Sherbin then sentenced her to six months in the Garrett County Jail, suspended the sentence and placed her on probation. Fines and costs of $465 were assessed.
Coddington was arrested and charged by Garrett County sheriff’s deputies who responded to a reported motor vehicle accident off of Sand Flat Road. Coddington had driven through a yard and into a field approximately 200 yards until her vehicle struck an embankment.
She appeared to officers to be under the influence but there was no evidence of alcohol consumption. A Maryland State trooper who is a certified drug recognition expert conducted specialized tests and determined Coddington was under the influence of a drug. Evidence in the vehicle and obtained through investigation confirmed Coddington had ingested medication that caused her condition at the time.
Melissa Kay Morgan, 29, Oakland, was found guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol, possession of marijuana and possession of controlled dangerous substance paraphernalia following a jury trial in the Circuit Court. Sentencing was postponed and will be scheduled in the near future.
Last July, Morgan was arrested and charged by Garrett County sheriff’s deputies who responded to a disturbance complaint along Deer Park Avenue in Mountain Lake Park.
Upon arrival, they found Morgan in her car in the driveway of a residence, honking her horn, with the keys in the ignition and lights on. Based on their observations and conversation, they determined she was under the influence of alcohol. Marijuana smoking pipes and a small quantity of marijuana were found in her car which was searched after a drug-detection dog alerted. An additional quantity of marijuana was found on her person when she was searched at the Garrett County Detention Center.
