Rig driver rescued from Potomac River at Oldtown

OLDTOWN — A tractor-trailer driver was rescued Wednesday morning from the Potomac River a short time after his rig loaded with railroad ties traveled off the Oldtown toll bridge and into the water. according to the Allegany County 911 center.

The driver was standing on top of the rig that was submerged in the river following the 8:58 a.m., accident. The driver was rescued about 45 minutes later and was expected to be taken to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.

The Bowling Green Water Rescue Team, the Allegany County Hazardous Incident Response Team, Oldtown, District 16, Potomac and LaVale volunteer fire departments, Maryland State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, Natural Resources Police, Allegany County Sheriff’s Office, West Virginia State Police,  and Allegany County 911 director Roger Bennett.

The 911 center said efforts were being made to bring a crane to the area to remove the rig from the river.
