Power outage hit Times-News, portion of downtown

CUMBERLAND — A power outage disrupted service to hundreds of customers in downtown Cumberland early Monday, including the Times-News, which was unable to keep its normal publishing schedule.

Potomac Edison spokesman Todd Meyers said the outage occurred at about 12:20 a.m., due to a problem in underground electrical equipment at Baltimore and Centre streets, disrupting service to more than 300 customers. The affected service area included  Centre, Liberty and Mechanic streets.

Potomac Edison crews responded to the incident and were able to restore service to 279 customers shortly after 3 a.m. All affected customers were back in service by 4:25 a.m. “We were able to do some switching and feed the affected customers in alternate ways,” said Meyers.

Meyers said water mixed with oil was discovered in the location of the underground equipment where the outage occurred.

An environmental contractor was called to the area to separate oil from the water as it was being pumped out of the underground equipment area in downtown Cumberland.

Meyers said the underground equipment was submersible but “one of the pieces failed” to cause the four-hour outage.

Delivery of the Monday edition of the Times-News was delayed. Efforts were being made to have as many of the newspapers as possible delivered to customers, however, some subscribers may receive the Monday edition with their Tuesday newspaper delivery.
