Former Ridgeley resident playing solo organ concert in London

CUMBERLAND — Former area resident Mary Mozelle, who now serves as director of music/organist at the First United Methodist Church in Bradenton, Fla., will perform a solo organ concert at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London on Aug. 11.

“This invitation to perform on the Sunday Grand Organ Recital Series is a great honor,” Mozelle wrote in an email to the Times-News. “Different professional organists from all over the world perform on this concert series each Sunday.”

A graduate of Ridgeley High School, Mozelle is the former Mary Moomaw. She studied music at the Methodist church in Cumberland before majoring in organ performance at West Virginia University, completing a master of music degree there in 1980.

Mozelle is a concert organist who has performed throughout the U.S. and in Great Britain. “I have played solo organ concerts at the National Cathedral and also the Kennedy Center, both in Washington, D.C.; St. Thomas Fifth Avenue in New York City; Princeton University Chapel in New Jersey; St. James Episcopal Cathedral in Chicago ... this list goes on and on,” Mozelle wrote. “Then in England I have performed at Exeter and Chester cathedrals as well as St. Giles in Edinburgh, Scotland.”

An invitation to play in the Sunday Grand Organ Recital Services is the “chance of a lifetime,” according to Mozelle. “Yes, that place where Princess Di was married and where the recent funeral of Margaret Thatcher was held. That place which is a historic symbol of London itself with the easily recognized beautiful dome hovering above the busy city streets. A pipe organ that was built in 1696 and which has been played by George Frederick Handel and Felix Men-delssohn.”
