Verizon plans cell tower in Flintstone

Move meant to improve area coverage

FLINTSTONE — A new cell tower in Flintstone should bring better coverage to Verizon customers in the region.

Right now, public comment is being requested on the possible impacts of the 199-foot tower, planned for Jim’s Lane NE in Flintstone.

If all goes well, “construction will begin in 2013 and activate by June 2014 if not sooner,” said Melanie Ortel, a spokeswoman for Verizon Wireless. The result of the new tower will expand service to Verizon customers.

“This is new market coverage for Verizon Wireless. This will increase coverage for Verizon Wireless customers and customers who roam on Verizon Wireless,” Ortel said in an email.

The new lattice tower will include both new towers and co-locations on an existing tower, said Ortel. No further details were available.

Public comment is being sought on potential effects on historic properties, according to a recent legal ad in the Times-News.

Public comment is due by July 20 and may be made via mail, email or phone referencing Project 61132921—SLG care of EBI Consulting, 6876 Susquehanna Trail S., York, Pa. 17403, or sgraulty@ebiconsulting.com, or at 207-210-2535.

Meanwhile, in a separate matter, Allegany County continues to expand emergency communications capabilities.

Earlier this year, a request for proposals to purchase a new 195-foot self-supporting communications tower in Barton went out.

That comes on top of major additions to the system’s capabilities in 2012 in an effort to provide better communications between emergency responders and dispatchers.

In 2012, Allegany County 911 answered and managed approximately 47,000 requests for help, county officials said. They also completed nine communication tower site projects and upgrade projects.
