CUMBERLAND — Officials with the Downtown Development Commission said Thursday during their regular monthly meeting that several resumes had been received so far for the position of promotions director.
It was also announced that the St. Patty’s Day Hooley and Pub Crawl will be held on March 15.
The DDC is looking to find a promotions director following the departure of Ed Mullaney from his post as downtown co-manager. Mullaney stepped down in October after 15 years of service to spend more time with his family.
“The deadline for filing (for promotions director) is Tuesday,” said Jennifer Light, downtown manger.
After all resumes have been received for the part-time contractual position, they will be reviewed by a committee of the DDC.
Officials hope to have the position filled by March 1.
In other news from the meeting, DDC member Doug Schwab, who has been working with various associates on economic development plans for downtown, gave a report on ideas he has received.
“The big box stores obviously we are not going to get. But some smaller things like a microbrew pub, vegetarian restaurant, clothing stores or a bakery could be key,” said Schwab.
Schwab said a plan could be developed to recruit those types of entrepreneurs.
The possibility of a retail space incubator site was also brought up by Schwab. “People who had a retail idea could open it up in the incubator and see how it works,” said Schwab.
Schwab thought this may be a better alternative to a past proposal of a city market. “Someone might be able to find a space to donate or we could find one for a small fee. We need to cost it out from scratch,” said Schwab.
Officials also discussed their desire to add new signs downtown.
The DDC members talked about obtaining an arch-type sign for the downtown to be placed at targeted mall entrances.
Officials also said the city is currently accepting requests for proposals in an attempt to secure a developer for 19 Frederick St.
The building was the former home of the Human Resources Development Commission.
