— CUMBERLAND — The ValuePenguin website has ranked Cumberland as the third best city in the U.S. for health care social workers.

“Health care social workers in Cumberland earn a median salary of $58,800 and practice in the company of 70 other peers. After a hard day’s work in the office, professionals here can take in some outdoor activity while biking along the Great Allegheny Passage, or festivals and events in downtown Cumberland,” the site reports.

Health care social workers provide a range of services that support patients’ medical needs in their psychosocial environment, from advising caregivers to coordinating medical services.

The ValuePenguin ranked U.S. cities based on three key issues — how much money professionals make in the city, how expensive it is to live there and what is the location quotient of the profession in the city. Location quotient measures the concentration of a particular occupation in the city as a proportion of all occupations relative to the national average.

The top two cities are Carson City, Nev., followed by Waterbury, Conn.

ValuePenguin considered more than 300 cities in developing its list.

The median salary for a health care social worker in the U.S. as of May 2012 was $47,770, according to ValuePenguin. There were 89,420 professionals employed in the U.S. as of May 2012. Jobs are projected to grow 26 percent from 2010 to 2020, which is 12 percentage points above the national job growth.
