Garrett students winners in state contest

Annual ‘Rethink Recycling’ diverts materials usually bound for landfill

OAKLAND — Garrett County students came home with awards from the 11th Annual “Rethink Recycling” State Sculpture Contest in Baltimore sponsored by the Maryland Department of the Environment in celebration of America Recycles Day.

Northern High School sophomore Dakota Wassell placed first in the category of Best Use of Materials for his sculpture titled “Phunny Pharm.” He was awarded a Nook tablet.

Second place in this category was won by Northern junior Dallas Hetrick for “Hubris ex Machina.” She won a refurbished Dell computer.

In the category of Voted Most Popular, Jillian Yant, a junior at Southern High School, won second place for “Flight of the Butterfly.” She also won a refurbished Dell computer.

First- and second-place awards were also given in Creativity, Workmanship and Overall Best-in-Show.

Six sculptures were taken to the state contest to compete after winning in the regional competition that was held at Garrett College the week before.

The regional sculptures and winners were: Yant, Best-In-Show; Hetrick, Creativity; Wassell, Workmanship; Madi Gallagher and Brooke Cosner tied for Voted Most Popular; and Gabrielle Daniels, Best Use of Materials.

Participation was made possible by donations from Cap-Glass Inc., Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc., End of the Line Books, Garrett 8 Cinemas, Junior Women’s Civic Club, Lakeside Creamery, Kim and Mike Madigan, Madigan’s Auto Sales, Mountain Laurel Garden Club, Ours Auto Salvage, Smiley’s Pizzeria and Pine Lodge Steakhouse, Stitch in Time and Sunrise Sanitation Services Inc.

“The recycled sculpture contest is a lot of fun and diverts materials from the landfill, which is very important,” said Kimberly Madigan, Garrett County recycling coordinator. “However, I think the best message it sends out to our youth is that materials can be reused one or two more times before being thrown away. We need to educate the next generation on how precious our natural resources are and how little resources there are left — and to not waste them.”

Funding for the regional competition and travel to the state competition was provided through a grant from the Garrett County Arts Council.

Selected sculptures from Northern and Southern High School students will be displayed at The Gallery Shop, 206 E. Alder St., through Dec. 1.
