Driver fails to stop for police; charged with 20 offenses

CUMBERLAND — An 18-year-old McMullen Highway man was jailed early Wednesday after he failed to stop in the city for Cumberland Police and then failed to stop again on state Route 36 in Mount Savage for an Allegany County Sheriff’s Office deputy.

Michael Ray Reckart was arrested without incident on 20 charges including fleeing and eluding police, second-degree assault, malicious destruction of property, and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Charges may be pending in Mineral County where Reckart allegedly had stolen the vehicle that he was driving when he was taken into custody.

Reckart remained jailed late Wednesday morning on $3,000 bond set by a district court commissioner.

Cumberland Police attempted to stop Reckart’s vehicle at 2 a.m. on Mechanic Street. Reckart failed to stop and drove outside the city where police called off the pursuit.

A short time later, Reckart was observed on Route 36 in Mount Savage and pursued to Mile Lane. Reckart allegedly struck the deputy’s vehicle twice and was arrested after he traveled into a ditch on Beartrack Farm Road.

Police determined that Reckart was driving with license privileges revoked and that the vehicle was stolen earlier in the night in Mineral County.
