Hardy County bank robbed; getaway vehicle set afire

— BAKER, W. Va. — Police are continuing to investigate Wednesday’s armed robbery of the Capon Valley Bank where two suspects fled with an undisclosed sum of money. Their getaway vehicle was found ignited in flames a short time later and not far from the bank located on Route 55 in Hardy County.

It was just after 11 a.m,, when the masked suspects entered the Capon Valley Bank, brandished a firearm and then fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

An immediate lookout was posted by the Hardy County 911 center for the suspect vehicle — a blue Chevy Malibu displaying Virginia registration KBS-8874 that was observed leaving the bank property traveling near U.S. Route 48.

Less than 15 minutes later, the vehicle was located on fire at Sauerkraut Road near the intersection with Route 55 by Hardy County Sheriff’s Department Deputy J. Vetter. Vetter told West Virginia Senior Trooper N.E. Higginbotham, the first responding officer at the scene of the armed robbery, that the getaway vehicle was determined to have been reported stolen from the Malloy Ford dealership in Winchester, Va.

One of the suspects was reportedly a stocky build male wearing a clown mask with orange hair and a large cloth suit of some type.

The second suspect was of slender build who was wearing a mask and was possibly a female, according to the Hardy 911 center.

Senior Trooper Higginbotham confirmed one suspect was wearing a white multi-colored clown mask with orange hair, a large cloth night gown with unknown designs, blue jeans, and work boots. The suspect reportedly had brown hair beneath the clown mask.

The second suspect was confirmed by state police to be wearing a black hoodie, gray sweat pants and a brown monkey mask. The suspect, possibly a female, brandished what appeared to be a firearm, police said.

Police also confirmed the suspect drove from the parking lot eastbound on Route 55 toward Route 48 but continued on Route 55.

State police were assisted by the Hardy County Sheriff’s Office. Fire marshal’s P. Barker and G. Harms responded to the vehicle fire to assist in processing the vehicle for evidence.

Police said the investigation is active and continuing.
