LaVale Rescue open house Saturday

Squad offering tours of new facility; soliciting volunteers

LAVALE — An open house is set for Saturday at the LaVale Rescue Squad to showcase its services and newly remodeled $1.2-million facility at 977 National Highway.

The event, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., is also being held in an effort to attract new volunteers who could become trained members of the squad that is celebrating its 45th year of community service.

“The open house is to let the public see what we have here, what we are doing with taxpayers’ money and to show the
services that are available to them,” said Ken May, president of the LaVale Rescue Squad.

Rescue squad units will be on display and the station will be available for walkthrough. Members will be present to greet the public. Light refreshments and a few children’s activities are also planned.

The squad’s active membership includes three paramedics and 27 emergency medical technicians. A paid county paramedic, Lynn Sweitzer, is on duty from the squad headquarters three eighthour days during the week.

At one time, the LaVale Rescue Squad had up to 70 active members. “That was in the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s,” said May, who
has served as a first responder volunteer since 1944.

The need for members of the community to join the squad has never been greater. “Volunteers are the backbone of this county and you can’t afford it any other way. Volunteers and paid work side by side,” he said.

“We are up to nearly 400 calls in the first five months of this year and last year our calls totaled 632,” said May.

To become a member of the LaVale Rescue Squad, you must be at least 16 years old, consent to a background check and provide five references on your application.
Applications may be picked up at the LaVale Rescue Squad. Completed applications may be returned there with a $10 application fee. Applicants then await a phone call for an interview by the squad’s membership committee. After being approved by the membership, the applicant will be sworn in at the next general membership meeting.
