Hardy County woman killed, husband injured in Route 28 crash

SPRINGFIELD, W. Va. — A Hardy County woman was killed and her husband hospitalized after their pick-up truck traveled out of control late Tuesday afternoon on Route 28 near Springfield after a rain storm passed through the area, according to West Virginia State Police.

Debbie Saul, 64, of Baker, died at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center following the 4:55 p.m., crash and following transport by the Springfield Rescue Squad.

Larry Saul, 65, also of Baker, was taken to the same hospital by the Romney Rescue Squad for treatment of injuries sustained in the single-vehicle crash.

Trooper D.J. Smith, of the Romney detachment, reported Debbie Saul was operating a 2000 Ford F-150, with her husband as a passenger, and headed northbound on Route 28 and negotiating a curve in the roadway when the vehicle traveled out of control.

Upon leaving the east roadway edge of Route 28, the vehicle collided with foliage and the ground before coming to rest on the driver’s side of the vehicle.

Police said it is believed that Debbie Saul was ejected out of the driver’s side window.

Initial investigation indicated that neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The accident remains under investigation by Trooper Smith with the assistance of State Police Cpl. M.G. Spence.
