One arrested in weekend stabbing

BEDFORD, Pa. — Two card-playing Bedford County man were released from the hospital Sunday after being treated for stab wounds to the neck they suffered in a fight at a residence along Buena Road in Juniata Township early Saturday, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Paul Joseph Griffith, 62, of Schellsburg, and Brian Keith Barnett, 44, of Manns Choice, were both admitted to the UPMC Altoona Hospital following the 2 a.m. incident.

Trooper Matthew P. Auker investigated and served an arrest warrant on Griffith charging him with criminal attempted homicide, aggravated assault, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person. The warrant was served on Griffith at the hospital at 5 p.m. Sunday.

Sunday evening, Griffith was released from the hospital and placed in the Bedford County Jail on $500,000 bond set by District Judge Brian Baker.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Griffith on Jan. 29 in the Bedford County Central Court.

Auker said late Monday morning that Barnett was released from the hospital Sunday evening.

Investigation showed Griffith and Barnett were drinking and playing cards when they argued and then became involved in an altercation. The knife used in the incident was described as a fillet knife, police said.

Both men were taken to the hospital by Bedford County EMS volunteer units.
