— KEYSER, W.Va. — The Keyser-Mineral County Public Library is asking residents to fill out a survey about what they want in a new library.

“As a librarian I have lots of ideas about what I want in a library but those are just my ideas. What we need to know is what the community wants,” said Connie Sutton, library director. “We are building it for the community and it’s a good idea to find out what the community wants.”

The survey, which can be completed online or filled out at any of the libraries in the county, consists of five questions. The questions range from what types of rooms and services the library should offer to what types of activities the library should host.

The survey will likely run for two months and an announcement will be made later as to when the survey period will end, according to Sutton. Residents’ suggestions will be taken into account and the next step in building a new library will be advertising for an architect.

At some point, a community meeting will be held to allow residents to discuss the new library.

In April, the Keyser-Mineral County Public Library received a $10,000 check in the form of a grant from the West Virginia Library Commission, which will be used toward the construction of a new library building on Cornell Street.

In December, the Keyser-Mineral County Public Library Board of Directors hired Mark Ksiazewski as the clerk of the works to transform the vision for the new library into a preliminary list of building spaces and building objectives.

The Keyser library, which serves as the main branch for a three-library county system, has been located in the former Farmers and Merchants bank building on North Main Street for 50 years. The library was created jointly by the city and the county.
