City man facing murder charge also eyed for 2010 death of woman

27-year-old Hagerstown victim is believed to be suspect’s ex-girlfriend

CUMBERLAND — The city man charged this week in the apparent death of a city woman missing since Sept. 5 is the subject of an “active and open” investigation into the 2010 death of 27-year-old Tammy Myerly in Hagerstown.

Hagerstown Police Sgt. John Lehman said Thursday that the case “with Miss Myerly in our jurisdiction remains open and active, especially in light of the investigation in Cumberland on Mr. Schleuniger.”

Stephen George Schleuniger, 44, was arrested Tuesday in Berkeley County, W.Va., on a first-degree murder charge in connection with the disappearance of 43-year-old Lisa Simmons from her Browning Street residence. After she failed to return home from work as expected, she was reported missing by her family to the Cumberland Police Department.

Simmons’ body has not been found but police believe she was killed by Schleuniger at the Browning Street residence after the couple had argued.

After initial investigation, Cumberland Police and the C3I Unit said Simmons’ disappearance was suspicious. Non-stop investigation of the matter since early September resulted in the arrest of Schleuniger, who remained jailed Thursday without bond at the Allegany County Detention Center. He waived extradition to be returned to Allegany County.

The C3I Unit said that all possible means to locate Simmons have been exhausted. That fact coupled with the discovery of a large amount of blood in the Browning Street residence, and forensic analysis of evidence, including DNA, resulted in the warrant that led to Schleuniger’s arrest.

It was Aug. 1, 2010, when Myerly was pronounced dead at her North Cannon Avenue residence in Hagerstown.

Her body was discovered by the landlord after neighbors complained of a foul odor.

Lehman said Myerly’s cause of death is known to investigators but that information has never been disclosed to the public.

The State Medical Examiner’s Office made the determination as part of the investigation still being conducted by the Hagerstown Police Department. “We are not at liberty to release those findings,” said Lehman.

Circumstances of Myerly’s death were immediately determined to be suspicious by Hagerstown Police — coupled with the fact that she had been living with Schleuniger until July 11, 2010, when Myerly sought a protective order to keep him away from her.

Court documents show she was to appear in court in September 2010 for a hearing after Schleuniger allegedly violated the order, according to a published report.

Hagerstown detectives have been in contact with Cumberland law enforcement in recent weeks, Lehman said.

Concerning Myerly’s death, Lehman said, “This is currently being looked into further.”
