Rocky Gap Casino Resort shows slight revenue drop

Impact from new poker tables won’t be known until intake from October tallied

CUMBERLAND — The casino at Rocky Gap continues to make a strong showing, despite a slight decline in overall revenue from August and September. Poker tables only opened this month, so their impact won’t be seen until numbers for October are available.

“I spent time last Tuesday at Rocky Gap with the House Finance Committee. In discussions with General Manager Scott Just, he felt things continue to do well. Rocky Gap has just added three poker tables which should prove to be profitable,” said Allegany County Commissioner Bill Valentine. Other operations are also moving forward.

“The conference rooms are still on schedule to open in November. All of this will add to the funding we can place in the Commissioners Scholarship Fund at Allegany College of Maryland. Also, with such good room rental totals, the ho-tel/motel tax will help the county pay the debt service on the Rocky Gap loans, which we are required to pay until 2017,” Valentine said. The conference center is expected to accommodate large groups for conferences.

Commission president Mich-ael McKay agreed that the outlook is optimistic.

“The commissioners are very happy to see that Rocky Gap Casino Resort continues to perform well. This destination, in my opinion, is successful because it is now in the hands of the private sector. Allegany County should realize even more success when the conference center has been complete in the near future,” McKay said.

Rocky Gap Casino Resort generated $3,130,297 from both slot machines and table games in September. Gross gaming revenue per unit per day was: $161.58 for slot machines and $1,417.97 for banking table games. The resort operates 558 slot machines and 10 banking table games. Rocky Gap introduced three new poker tables on Oct. 4, according to The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agen-cy.

The September revenue compares to earnings of $4,010,846 from both slot machines and table games in August. Gross gaming revenue per unit per day in August was $202.41 for slot machines and $1,643.83 for banking table games, according to the agency.

September’s combined statewide revenue totaled $65,333,711, the agency reported. That’s also lower than the August statewide revenue of $71,015,560.

Rocky Gap Casino Resort is owned by Evitts Resort, LLC, and is a subsidiary of Lakes Entertainment Inc.
