Suspect sought in city shooting incident

CUMBERLAND — One man was injured and a second man was being sought by police following a shooting incident Monday evening on Independence Street, according to the C3I Unit and Cumberland Police.

The victim, 24-year-old Rodricus Wilkes, was injured at about 6:35 p.m. in an altercation in which a handgun was reportedly fired three times.

Wilkes initially believed he had been shot but medical examination determined he had been struck in the back of the head with a blunt object.

Police said three shots were fired during an altercation between Wilkes and the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Antonio “AJ” Fagan Jr. of Cumberland.

Wilkes was treated by Cumberland Fire Department ambulance personnel and taken to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for further care.

Investigators with the C3I Unit responded to assist Cumberland Police with the investigation.

Through interviews of the victim and witnesses, investigators learned that there had been an altercation in front of a residence in the first block of Independence Street between the victim and the suspect.

Police said that apparently while the suspect was striking the victim in the head with the gun, it discharged. At least an additional two more shots were fired.

The victim, believing he had been shot, ran to another residence where the occupants called 911.

The suspect was last seen as he entered a dark, late-model SUV as a passenger and fled the scene, police said.

C3I obtained a search-and-seizure warrant for a residence on Independence Street where several items of evidence were recovered — including one of the spent projectiles believed fired during the altercation.

The scene was processed by a crime scene technician with the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division.

Investigators have obtained an arrest warrant for Fagan, charging him with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, use of a handgun during the commission of a felony and related charges.

Investigators are asking anyone who may know the whereabouts of Fagan to contact C3I at 301-777-0326 or the Cumberland Police at 301-777-1600.

Callers who wish to remain anonymous may call the Allegany/Mineral County Crime Solvers at 301-722-4300. Rewards of up to $1,500 are offered for information leading to an arrest in the case.
