Tri-Towns robber pepper sprays pharmacy staff

CUMBERLAND — A Barton woman was arrested late Tuesday morning after she allegedly robbed the Tri-Towns Pharmacy in Westernport and sprayed employees with pepper spray before running from the business.

The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office arrested Sandra Susann Duckworth, 28, on charges of robbery, assault, theft, resisting arrest and use of a deadly weapon following the incident that occurred at about 9:30 a.m.

At least two employees were injured when pepper spray was reportedly sprayed in their faces by Duckworth, police said.

The injured workers were treated at the scene by Tri-Towns EMS personnel, according to the Allegany County 911 Center.

It was an anonymous tip that reportedly led deputies to the whereabouts of Duckworth, who was arrested at the rear of a residence on Old Beechwood Road in Lonaconing, according to the sheriff’s office. The arrest was made before noon.

Duckworth was reportedly found in possession of allegedly stolen prescription drugs and pepper spray when she was taken into custody.

By late afternoon, Duckworth was jailed in the Allegany County Detention Center on $250,000 bond set by a district court commissioner.

Police said Duckworth also threatened to shoot the employees during the incident. No handgun was found during the investigation.

Tuesday’s incident reportedly occurred minutes after Duckworth was declined a prescription by the pharmacy. She returned a short time later, charged through the front door and sprayed employees with pepper spray before fleeing the Main Street business with prescription medications that she had demanded.

Duckworth was reportedly identified as the suspect at the time of the incident by the victims.
