Logging truck tips, spills load on National Highway

Driver injured; road closed for several hours

LAVALE — A logging truck overturned in the 500 block of National Highway at about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, injuring the driver and closing the roadway for several hours, according to the Allegany County 911 center.

The driver, 62-year-old Michael E. Hartfell of Pennsylvania, suffered non-life threatening injuries in the 8:33 a.m. crash that occurred near Bunnies Tavern. He was taken to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Traffic was detoured from U.S. Route 40 at Long Drive and at Route 40 and state Route 36 in the Narrows for several hours until the truck and its load of timber was removed from the road.

Investigation determined Hartfell was operating a tractor-trailer loaded with timber when the load shifted as he was allegedly traveling too fast while negotiating a curve, according to the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said the truck was taking the load of timber from the Glencoe, Pa., area to the Luke paper mill.

Police said charges are pending and several violations were detected on the truck that is registered to Laid Back Trucking of Aurora, W.Va.

The vehicle was inspected by the Maryland State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division in assistance to the sheriff’s office in its ongoing investigation.

LaVale Rescue Squad and LaVale and Corriganville volunteer fire departments responded to the scene along with the Allegany County Fire Police. State Highway Administration personnel also assisted at the scene.

A second incident was reported on Long Drive within an hour of the truck crash when a rig knocked down a low-lying power line on Long Drive.

Potomac Edison personnel were able to replace the downed line within a short time of responding to the incident, according to the emergency center.

No outages were reported to the emergency center.
