Commissioners looking to improve courthouse’s roof

KEYSER, W.Va. — Mineral County commissioners have submitted an application to the state Courthouse Facilities Improvement Authority for a $68,600 project, according to Mike Bland, county coordinator.

“We are requesting $54,880 in a courthouse facilities grant — $26,000 is requested to complete the project approved last year,” said Bland. “The bids came in about $27,000 over the estimate, plus there was a reduction of $7,000 of what we had actually requested. That would be to replace the cornice on the main part of the building and then $39,600 to replace the built-up roofs on both the east and west additions.”

The commission will find out in November if it is to be awarded the work on the cornice, said Bland.

“We can actually go ahead and add it to the work that has already been designed,” said Bland. “We have culture and history clearance and actually have a bid on it. We just need to amend the contract for Tri-State (Roofing) and they can go ahead and complete that work. If the roofing work is approved we would have to advertise that and it would be done by next spring.”

The plaster in the ceiling over the circuit clerk’s vault is beginning to become loose because of moisture coming through it, according to Bland. The last time new roofs were installed was in 1992. The roof over the county clerk’s side of the building is in better shape than the one on the circuit clerk’s side, said Bland.

Also during the meeting, Commissioner Janice LaRue indicated that she attended the West Virginia Association of Counties legislative meeting recently.

“All six elected official offices worked on their legislative agenda,” said LaRue. “For the most part, everyone approved what all the other offices wanted, except we didn’t agree with homestead and other classifications that came up.”

The West Virginia Association of Counties will hold a regional jail summit Sunday in Clarksburg, according to LaRue.

“We need to figure out a way to pay these jail bills,” said LaRue. “We are going to have a summit where all the county commissioners can meet and figure out if there is any legislation that we can come up with that would help with regional jail costs. All 55 counties, we are all in the same dilemma.”

Also during the meeting, the commissioners approved for Bland to order two Dodge Chargers from Greenbrier Motor Co. in Lewisburg for the sheriff’s department.
