Retired law enforcement officers hired to provide security in county schools

CUMBERLAND — The Allegany County Board of Education announced Tuesday that three veterans of the law enforcement community have been hired by the board to serve as school security officers when classes begin on Aug. 26.
The hiring of the three retired officers, who will provide a security rotation for schools outside the city, was disclosed during the board’s regular meeting at the central office on Washington Street.
“I have worked will all three of them and they are good choices,” said Allegany County Sheriff Craig Robertson at the meeting.
The three officers, who were introduced at the meeting, were: Steve Wininger, a 21-year-veteran of the Maryland State Police; Timothy Stevens, a 28-year-veteran from the Frostburg State University Police Department and Brian Hughes, a 24-year-state police veteran.
The board has been working since January on getting the security officers in place.
“I’m real excited tonight about our new hirees. We’ve worked real hard to get here,” said board member Mike Llewellyn.
Llewellyn, who acts as a liaison on security issues between the BOE and the sheriff’s office, said that a process to hire additional school security officers is under way at the sheriff’s office as well.
The new security officers will wear a uniform and a badge and carry a concealed firearm.
The officers will also take a weeklong course that begins Sunday to obtain the certifications required to teach DARE, the school system’s drug awareness program.
The board also announced it has submitted a request for additional security equipment for the schools to the Interagency Committee of School Construction, which has funds available through a state security initiative grant.
The equipment would consist of entry access controls, additional security cameras, increased server storage capacity and public safety notification devices.
The board also said Tuesday that the ex-officio board member, who is a member of the Allegany‚ÄąCounty Commission, has been welcomed into executive sessions.
