Mineral school board members choose citizens to interview candidates for superintendent

KEYSER, W.Va. — The last day for candidates to apply for the Mineral County superintendent of schools position is Monday and each of the board of education members has chosen who will serve on the citizen group that will interview the applicants, according to Mineral County Board of Education President Kevin Watson.

The citizen group will interview applicants May 19 at 4 p.m. and the board will conduct its interviews at 5 p.m. During the board meeting May 20, members of the public, including citizens, school employees and students can present their ideas on the topic.

“These presentations help the board understand your thinking about the characteristics
and qualities critical for the incoming county schools superintendent’s success,” said Watson. “Individual presentations are limited to five minutes and they will need to provide a copy of their prepared remarks.”

The board plans to announce its selection in early June.

Current Superintendent
Rob Woy is retiring in June and Howard O’Cull, executive director of the West Virginia School Board Association, was hired to help find Woy’s replacement.

The following is a list of people who were chosen for the citizen group by each board member:

• Watson: Joseph Riley, principal, Frankfort High School; Mary Aronhalt, former board member; and Susan Grady, board personnel director.

• Board member Terry LaRue chose Shelly Friend, Keyser and Tri-Towns community office manager of First United Bank & Trust; Cindy Pyles, resource development manager of Burlington United Methodist Family Board Services; and Paula Boggs, director of the Piedmont Library and Piedmont Council member.

• Board member Butch Wahl: Dr. William Ludwick, who is board candidate and dentist in Keyser; Michael Price, CEO of BUMFS; and James McCune, pastor, Grace United Methodist Church.

• Board member Craig Rotruck: Hayward Wilson, local businessman and parent of Mineral County students, and John Staggers, local businessman and 1989 Kelley Award nominee.

• Board member Lara Courrier: Heather Courrier Ack and Sherri Pancake, parents of Mineral County students.

The board meeting will be held May 20 at 5 p.m., at the board Central Office, One Baker Place.
