— CUMBERLAND — The Elkins detachment of the West Virginia State Police presented Rodney Ross of Cumberland, a driver with D&W Truck Lines, an award of recognition for preventing a potentially devastating traffic accident.

“I feel really good about receiving the award,” said Ross in an interview with the Times-News. “Truckers don’t usually get recognition for stuff like this.”

Lt. D.E. Johnson with the state police told The Inter Mountain that Ross saved several people from injury and it was worthy of recognition.

On the morning of Jan. 10, Johnson was responding to a motor vehicle accident on state Route 92 in Barbour County.

The car was partially in a ditch and partially in the roadway on the downhill side of a blind turn, according to The Parsons Advocate.

Johnson was in the process of having the driver get back into her vehicle when he noticed a truck coming around the blind turn and sliding toward the police cruiser.

Johnson pulled the woman into his cruiser and attempted to get out of the path of the truck, which was driven by Ross.

The front of the truck passed Johnson in the opposing lane as he was sliding downhill.

“The truck and my cruiser traveled side by side down the icy roadway,” Johnson told The Parsons Advocate.

Ross was able to avoid hitting the cruiser by pulling into the opposing lane.

“I was just driving along and I didn’t think there was black ice on the road,” said Ross in an interview with the Times-News. “I saw the woman wrecked on the side of the road and I hit my brakes and the engine died. I fought (the truck) for the better of a quarter of a mile.”

Ross has been with D&W Truck Lines Inc. for more than 20 years.

“We are very proud of him for his quick actions which comes from years of experience,” Brandon Wilfong, owner and president of D&W Truck Lines told The Parsons Advocate. “I am grateful for law enforcement recognizing Ross’ actions and abilities.”
