Fire destroys W.Va. home

Residents arrive in time to save an elderly woman inside

GREEN SPRING, W.Va. — No one was hurt in a fire that completely destroyed a Hampshire County home on Sunday after winds helped spread the blaze that started with a report  of a garage fire at 12:27 p.m., according to Jerry Loudin, fire chief with the Springfield Valley Volunteer Fire Company.

Most of the residents of the wood-frame house, located on the corner of Arnold Stickley Road and Crystal Hollow Road, were not home but arrived in time to remove an elderly women who was inside.

The residents’ identities were not immediately available and no one required medical attention, according to Loudin.

Assistance from Slanes-ville Fire, Corriganville and Bowling Green, with special capabilities, were also required to quell a brushfire that resulted from embers blowing into the adjacent wooded areas.

No fire hydrants were available, so water was used from a nearby pond, Loudin said.

Although the initial call said the fire had started in the garage, Springfield Valley, the first company to arrive, found the quickly spreading fire had the  home three-quaters engulfed, he said.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

Other companies responding to the blaze were Romney, Levels, Fort Ashby, Paw Paw, Oldtown, Patterson Creek and District 16.
