I-68 downtown ramp to reopen Monday

Weekend closure part of work to repair Crosstown Bridge

CUMBERLAND — The exit 43C ramp from eastbound Interstate 68 to downtown Cumberland will remain closed through Monday morning to allow crews to repair the concrete driving surface.

The State Highway Administration will reopen the ramp at 6 a.m. Monday, weather permitting. It was closed Friday night.

The closure is necessary as crews will cut out a large area of concrete, thoroughly clean the area, and then pour new concrete, which requires up to 24 to 36 hours to cure.

The patching is part of a $14 million bridge rehabilitation project that also includes repairs, cleaning and painting below the bridge. Motorists should expect continued single-lane closures on I-68 through late May due to patching on the bridge surface. These closures begin each Sunday at 8 p.m. and continue around the clock through Friday at noon to allow time for concrete to cure.

SHA's contractor for the project is Titan Industrial Services Inc. of Baltimore. More information is available at www.bitly.com/ crosstownbridge.

Beginning Monday, the parking area under the bridge between Queen City Drive and South Centre Street will close. This permit-only parking area is operated by the city of Cumberland, and permit holders will be directed to another nearby parking area.

Beginning June 1, the parking area under the bridge between South Johnson Street and Bridge Street, west of Wills Creek, will also close.

Both sections will be closed to parking for several months.

The parking area under the bridge between South Centre Street and South Mechanic Street will remain open. Alternative parking is also available for a monthly fee from Merling Wholesale at the former Moose Lodge building on Beall Street. Call 301-729-2571.

More information about city parking lots and permits is available from the Cumberland Parking En-forcement Office at 301-759-6473.

Crews are currently blast-cleaning and painting the steel on the section of the bridge over Canal Place and the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. Completion of that section is expected by mid-July. Meanwhile, crews will be repairing the concrete bridge supports in the newly closed sections.
