City man charged with assaulting officer

CUMBERLAND — A city man remained jailed Thursday on numerous charges, including assault of a police officer that allegedly occurred when the defendant attempted to escape from the Cumberland Police station during arrest processing.

The officer and the defendant were both treated and released following the incident that occurred at about 1 a.m.

It was not immediately known if the officer would be able to return to duty without interruption due to his injuries.

Police charged Sean McElwee, 35, with attempted escape, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, first-degree assault and three counts of second-degree assault before he was jailed on $35,000 bond set by a district court commissioner.

Officers first encountered McElwee during investigation of an assault complaint at about 12:30 a.m. in the 200 block of East Harrison Street. McElwee allegedly struck a female victim twice in the face and then struck a male victim in the ear and jaw area with scissors.

McElwee ran but was located outside the residence and taken into custody without further incident.

Neither victim required medical attention.

At the Cumberland Police station, McElwee allegedly struck an officer in the face and gouged the officer’s eye in an attempt to escape.

The officer was able to break free and overcome the attack by using his department-issued Taser to subdue McElwee.

The injured police officer and McElwee were taken to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center by Cumberland Fire Department ambulances.
