FSU student trying to gauge interest in Cumberland airport

FROSTBURG — A Frostburg State University student is attempting to use a survey to gauge interest in commuter air service to and from the Greater Cumberland Regional Airport.

The survey, posted here, is part of a class project being conducted by Christopher Cropper.

Cropper is a Salisbury native and is a junior at FSU, majoring in geography and minoring in political science.

“With my interests being in geography and traveling, I decided to conduct my feasibility study on the potential of bringing a commercial airline to the Greater Cumberland Regional Airport. Since late 2001, there has not been a commercial airline to serve the local airport. I feel there is a need for an airline service to and from the Baltimore/D.C. region, not only for the tourism industry, but also for Allegany County’s business community,” Cropper said.

As part of his project, Cropper has been working with Ryan Shaffer, the airport manager. “Mr. Shaffer has given me valuable insight and knowledge on what is needed to bring an airline back. Whether the study concludes this to be feasible or not, my main goal is to bring attention to this matter, and I hope one day this could become a reality,” Cropper said.

He will use the results of his five-question survey as one of the key factors in his feasibility study.

The Times-News will share results of the survey with readers once Cropper completes his findings.
