— CUMBERLAND — The DelFest Foundation Service Committee has teamed up with WFRB and GO 106 for its annual goods and funds drive for the cold weather shelter at the Union Rescue Mission.

Donations will be collected Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Life Fitness Management parking lot on National Highway in LaVale and the Western Maryland Railway Station parking lot in Cumberland. This all-volunteer effort results in money and goods going directly to the Union Rescue Mission to cover its expenses and stock its shelves.

The cold weather shelter assists area people who are in need of housing during the winter months. Last year, the drive raised more than $1,000 and collected a truck load of goods. This year’s goal is to exceed those numbers since the need for assistance continues to grow.

It is estimated that there are more than 200 homeless individuals and families in the community. The DelFest Foundation Service Committee wants to make a difference and asks that members of the community donate any of the following items:

• Money — credit cards will be accepted on-site; checks should be payable to DelFest Foundation

• Travel-size toiletry items

• Twin sheets, pillows and blankets

• Canned food, preferably large size

• Diapers, size 4-5

The purpose of the DelFest foundation is to nurture a strong community, raise awareness of social justice issues and support a healthy environ-ment. Fundraising efforts also include music and other arts events. The foundation strives to take an active role in affecting positive, lasting change in the community.
