Blaze destroys former magistrates building in Romney

State Fire Marshal’s Office investigating cause, origin

— ROMNEY, W.Va. — Fire of an unknown origin destroyed the former magistrate’s building at 239 W. Birch Lane late Monday, according to the Hampshire County 911 center.

A neighbor reportedly discovered the fire in the unoccupied two-story building just after 11 p.m., with first reports indicating flames were shooting through the roof.

No injuries were reported in the fire operation that brought out numerous volunteer fire companies, including Romney, Springfield, Burlington, Augusta, Moorefield, Levels and Slanesville.

Volunteers were called back to the scene for a rekindle shortly before 5 a.m.

The cause and origin of the fire is being investigated by the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Investigators were on the scene Tuesday morning, according to the 911 center.
