— PURGITSVILLE, W.Va. — A 17-year-old Purgitsville girl died Friday morning when the car she was driving was struck by two tractor-trailers on U.S. Route 220 in Hampshire County, West Virginia State Police said.

The unidentified teen was operating a Hyundai Elantra south when the vehicle was reportedly sideswiped by a northbound Kenworth truck operated by Robert Thompson, 29, of Cartersville, Va., according to a report from Senior Trooper E.V. Vaubel. The vehicle spun around and struck a guardrail on the east roadway edge before being struck by the second northbound rig driven by Darrell Perryman, 27, of Howardsville, Va. Both truck drivers were not injured, police said.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by Hampshire County Medical Examiner Penny Hartman following the 6:45 a.m. crash that occurred near Rada Road. Police said she was not wearing a seat belt.

Fire and rescue units from Romney, Burlington and Moorefield responded along with the West Virginia Public Service Commission.

State police were assisted in the investigation by the Hampshire County Sheriff’s Department.
