Cumberland potholes being patched

CUMBERLAND — Cumberland street crews were out Thursday filling potholes that have developed on the streets of the Queen City during this storm-filled winter.

“It’s a temporary fix because we have to use cold patches because of the low temperatures,” said Mayor Brian Grim. “The hot mix plants aren’t even open yet.”

“Unfortunately during this time of year there is no hot mix,” said City Administrator Jeff Rhodes.  “When you combine cold mix with water that is often in holes this time of year, it simply comes back out.”

Grim said it is possible that crews will continue patching through the weekend.

On Wednesday, the Times-News used its Facebook page to ask readers to identify the location of potholes in the city. As of 9 a.m. Thursday, almost 5,000 people had viewed the question and 147 had commented.

The most commonly mentioned street with bad potholes was Greene. City crews were patching that heavily used thoroughfare Thursday morning. Other frequently mentioned streets were Virginia and Maryland avenues as well as Lee and Centre. Some who commented reported damage to their vehicles because of driving through potholes.

“In previous winters, we were able to cold patch potholes, but because the storms came back to back to back this year, we couldn’t do that,” Grim said.

The mayor said he believes additional funds may be available for paving this summer. He said his personal paving priorities are White Avenue, Winifred Avenue, Greene Street, Centre Street and Virginia Avenue in the area of the CSX underpass.
