— BEDFORD, Pa. — The secretary to the warden of Bedford County Prison is accused of stealing more than $50,000 in cash from money collected from incoming inmates over a five-year period.

Sheila Jane Suter of Bedford was charged by Pennsylvania State Police with theft and was arraigned Friday morning before Magisterial District Judge H. Cyril Bingham. Bail was set at $75,000.

Warden David Kessling was performing Suter’s duties when she was out of work for a period of time and discovered discrepancies in deposits that were being made, police said.

Kessling found out that the cash collected between January 2008 and Aug. 1, 2013, had not been deposited. When he reviewed the prison’s financial records, he reported to police the total unaccounted for was $50,060.68.

Police interviewed Suter and said that she admitted to taking the cash.

Suter reimbursed the inmates’ accounts using the county’s account at First National Bank so the inmates would not incur monetary loss, police said.
