Mineral sheriff warns of presciption pill scam

Taylor on receiving end of phone call from man claiming to be DEA agent

KEYSER, W. Va. — Area residents are being alerted to a telephone scam where a suspect calls a person and informs them they are a federal agent investigating the purchase of illegal prescription pills over the Internet.

Mineral County Sheriff Jeremy Taylor told the Times-News that his office had met recently with a victim, who said a person claiming to be from the Drug Enforcement Administration called his personal cell phone number and told the victim he is the subject of a federal investigation.

The suspect then advised the victim to send a money order for $1,800 to him to avoid any further “proceeding or prosecution.”

The victim was reporting the crime to the sheriff when he received another call from the alleged scammer. The victim received a call from a telephone number that belongs to a local police agency from the same perpetrator, who had previously identified himself as a “federal agent” by the last name of Wright.

The sheriff then spoke directly to the caller who again claimed that he was a federal agent and that he had forwarded “investigating” information to a local police agency. The suspect named the police agency and gave the sheriff that police agency’s address.

When the sheriff identified himself and informed the caller that no law enforcement agency would conduct such an investigation, the suspect ended the call. He has not called back since that time.

“These computer guys are able to make calls from these magic jacks and computers so the caller ID shows any number they want to enter in. This guy was very convincing even when he was talking to me and I don’t want the public to fall for this scam or think law enforcement would conduct an investigation this way,” said Taylor.
