National Preparedness month tips offered

CUMBERLAND — Preparing for emergencies can save your life, or at least make hunkering down during a storm a little less scary and stressful.

To that end, Allegany County emergency officials are encouraging citizens to participate in National Preparedness Month during September and are offering online tips and education for residents.

All citizens are being urged to participate in developing a disaster preparation plan for themselves and their families, said Susan Lee, the county’s emergency management division chief.

“We each have a vested interest in our own emergency preparation,” Lee said.

Each week during September, the emergency management department will post a portion of a preparedness booklet online to offer tips for emergency preparedness, Lee said, ”so we can be ready for the next storm.” Lee was especially referring to last year’s beating the county took from the remnants of Hurricane Sandy and the derecho.

For the first week of September, the emphasis was on staying informed.

Among the suggestions offered was that if you are a parent with school-aged children, you should become familiar with your child’s school emergency plans in order to be aware of how the school handles emergencies and contacts with parents. It’s also important to know your employers emergency plans, according to documents provided on the county’s website.

This week’s focus is on making a family or individual emergency plan. Week three explains how to make an emergency kit and the final week of the month encourages everyone to get involved by supporting local emergency responders and other activities. Items to include in an emergency kit are listed on the website.

Commissioners issued a proclamation in recognition of the preparedness month encouraging “all citizens and stakeholders to develop their own emergency preparedness plan and work with the Allegany County Department of Emergency Services to enhance emergency preparedness in our community.”
