Commissioners give go-ahead to construction of new sheriff’s office

FLINTSTONE — During its public meeting on Thursday, the Allegany County Commission authorized the Department of Public Works to proceed with advertising and accepting bids for construction of a shell building for a new sheriff’s office at the intersection of Kelly Road and Springfield Street, on what is now a grassy space in front of the county office building.

The advertising will take place next week and construction should begin three weeks after the bids are opened, according to Adam Patterson, county engineer.

“It’s as fast as we can move,” said Patterson.

In March, commissioners voted to award three contracts totaling $60,025 to Chaney Architects, East Hills Engineering and Regan Matonack and Associates to work with the county’s Office of Public Works to design and build the new offices.

“Our project plan is to have the architect prepare plans and specifications and bid the construction of a building shell, consisting of walls, roof, doors and windows,” said a memo prepared by Paul Kahl, the county’s director of public works.

The fitting of the building’s interior and interior construction would be done by county staff to save money, officials have said.

The current sheriff’s building on Furnace Street is too small and lacks secure storage space.

In other commission news, David Eberly, county administrator, requested the county’s fairgrounds rules be amended to include some language dissuading people from disguising their faces and wearing masks that make it hard to identify them should something problematic occur. William Rudd, county attorney, will prepare the language to add to the fairgrounds rules and will present it at the next commission meeting.

The commissioners are working to ensure that meetings are more accessible and to make information more accessible to the public. Thursday’s commission meeting was videotaped and can be viewed on local cable channels as well as YouTube. Future meetings will also be broadcast. Commission president Mike McKay will also be broadcasting Commissioner’s Chat, which features a discussion on matters that are relative to the county, on YouTube. The YouTube videos can be found on the county’s website at http://gov.allconet.org/.

Residents can also sign up for a quarterly newsletter on the website.

The next public business meeting will be held Thursday at 5 p.m. in Room 100 in the county office building on Kelly Road.
