Community members will come together to Beautify the ’Burg

Citywide spring cleaning project happening May 3

FROSTBURG — The community of Frostburg will come together for some “spring cleaning” on May 3, in a citywide project called Beautify the ‘Burg.

Now in its 14th year, this community beautification initiative was originally known as a the Day of Caring and Sharing. The event is a true collaborative effort, hosted by the city of Frostburg, in conjunction with Frostburg State University and FrostburgFirst.

FSU students, businesses, organizations and citizens will join forces to tackle beautification projects throughout the Mountain City from 8 a.m. to noon.

“Right now, we expect to have more than 400 volunteers, students, business owners, residents and area organizations committed to working together on more than 40 projects throughout Frostburg,” said Christine Werner, FrostburgFirst.

Werner said projects will also include painting lampposts along the streets and landscaping work at the Frostburg Depot. However, volunteers will also be available to assist business owners with window cleaning, sidewalk sweeping and other small jobs to improve local storefronts.

Frostburg business owners are encouraged to contact the FrostburgFirst office if they would like volunteers to help clean windows or other small jobs that could help the business “blossom.”

Homeowners are also asked to join this effort by sweeping sidewalks, planting flowers and making general improvements to beautify every street and neighborhood in Frostburg.

The House and Garden Club of Frostburg will be coordinating plantings at area parks as well as entrances to the community.

Volunteers will also have the option of volunteering at the Frostburg Grows: Grow It Local Greenhouse Project. The Frostburg Grows project is the construction of a 5-acre greenhouse on strip-mined land, located in Frostburg.

According to Alex Williams, volunteer coordinator, the variety of projects is extensive, and he is confident there is a job that will meet everyone’s interests and skill-set.

“We have many different areas where people can volunteer throughout Frostburg. We will be helping the city of Frostburg with several projects, including cleaning Christmas wreaths, gardening and helping at city parks,” Williams said.

Participants are asked to meet at St. Michaels Church at 8 a.m. on May 3. Following the morning of volunteering, participants will be invited to a luncheon at City Place.

“We want every person coming in to Frostburg to feel welcomed and experience the community pride we have here,” said Daniel Witter, FrostburgFirst assistant. “Beautify the ‘Burg is an opportunity for everyone to work together to welcome spring and show community sprit and pride, while giving back to our community in a way that will benefit everyone who lives or visits Frostburg.”

If you would like to volunteer for the Beautify the ‘Burg event, contact Williams at 301-687-7598 or amwilliams@frostburg.edu or Christine Werner, Main Street manager, at 301-689-6900 or via email at frostburgfirst@gmail.com.

Organizers and volunteers alike hope this day will be a symbol of the community pride that is in “full bloom” in Frostburg.
