Police find stolen taxicab, arrest suspect, 19

— CUMBERLAND — On Saturday, Cumberland Police were notified by the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office that a motor vehicle crash in Garrett County involved a taxicab from Cumberland.

The driver fled the scene of the accident.Officers from Cumberland Police Department began an investigation into the incident and found that the taxicab had been parked on Charles Street by the company’s driver at the end of his shift.

Police did not identify the cab company.

Officers were able to view a nearby surveillance camera, which was focused onto the area where the vehicle was parked, and observed a male subject checking vehicles in the area for unlocked doors.

The suspect allegedly located the taxicab, entered it and drove away.

The Garrett County Sheriff’s Office was able to find identification left behind in the taxicab and the video surveillance confirmed the identity of the suspect in the motor vehicle theft.

Cumberland Police officers were able to locate the suspect while on patrol in the area of Park Street.  

At approximately 2:40 p.m. officers arrested Dez’mond Deon Holmes, 19 of Cumberland on charges of motor vehicle theft and rogue and vagabond.

Holmes was also served with an arrest warrant from Garrett County District Court in reference to the motor vehicle crash. He was taken to Allegany County District Court for an initial appearance and remains held on $8,500 bond late Sunday at the Allegany County Detention Center.
