Moss Avenue project will improve fire protection for homes, county fairgrounds

Replacing corroded water line will provide greater pressure

— CUMBERLAND — A $170,000 block grant will aid a water project that will improve fire protection for the Moss Avenue neighborhood and the Allegany County Fairgrounds.

While the project is small, it will be important for the community, county officials said. Six homes are directly on the water line.

“The existing water line is heavily corroded, reducing the flow and resulting in rusty water. The project will increase volume, reliability, quality and fire protection for the neighborhood
and the Allegany County Fairgrounds,” according to a report prepared by Allegany County staff. The project design is being handled by county staff to expedite the schedule and save money, officials said.

One major purpose of the project is to improve water pressure to the fairgrounds by increasing the size of the water line, said David Nedved, economic and community development representative for the county. Events at the fairgrounds are attracting larger crowds, and better pressure will help accommodate the

demand for water, Nedved said.

The project is estimated to cost $335,000. In addition to the block grant, an additional $150,000 grant is being sought from the Appalachian Regional Commission. The remaining $15,000 will likely be a loan to be repaid by users of the system.

The project will replace 1,700 feet of a 6-inch cast iron water line with an 8-inch PVC water line. In addition, 750 feet of new water laterals will be added. An alternate connection for water service will be made to a 20-inch water main on U.S. Route 220. The section of water line to be replaced runs the full length of Moss Avenue, according to the report prepared by county staff.

While the project can go out to bid, a start date is uncertain, Nedved said. It is possible work on the project could begin in the summer, Nedved said.

The project was discussed and acceptance of the block grant approved at the Thursday Allegany County commissioners business meeting at the county office complex on Kelly Road.
