Adult charges in rock-throwing incident to be decided this week

By Justin Strawser The Daily Item

MILTON — Two juveniles allegedly involved in a rock-throwing incident in New Columbia, Pa. that left an Ohio woman fighting for her life may still be charged as adults.

Sgt. Frederick Dyroff of the Milton State Police Barracks in Hershey said Monday that he expects Union County District Attorney Pete Johnson to make a decision within the next few days on what charges, if any, those unidentified children will face.

“It’s a heinous crime. What they did is beyond absurd and ridiculous. They should be charged to fullest extent of the law,” Dyroff said.

Sharon Budd, 52, of Uniontown, Ohio, remains in critical condition Monday morning at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, according to a hospital spokesman.

Dylan Lahr, 17, of New Columbia, Pa., has already been charged as an adult. He and Brett Lahr, 18, of New Columbia, Pa., were arrested late Friday night in the incident and face identical felony charges of aggravated assault and conspiracy, as well as seven misdemeanors.

Dyroff said law enforcement officials consider the nature and seriousness of the crime when determining whether juveniles should be charged as adults.

He would not discuss their ages or other details.

Johnson and Trooper Philip Davis, who filed the charges against the Lahrs, were not available Monday for comment.

Budd, her husband Randy and their daughter Kaylee were traveling eastbound on Interstate 80 for a week-long trip to New York City when a large rock thrown from the Gray Hill Road overpass struck their vehicle at 11:56 p.m. Thursday.

The rock smashed through the windshield and struck Sharon Budd, in the front passenger seat, in the face.

Lindsay Bannister, a family friend, said Sharon lost an eye and had to have parts of her skull removed to allow the brain to swell for a risky procedure.

If Sharon Budd survives, she will need multiple facial reconstructive surgeries, Bannister said.

Randy, her husband of 31 years, and their children Luke, 29, James, 24, Joey, 22, and Kaylee, 19, have been at the hospital since the incident.

Luke Budd, a National Guardsman, was specially brought in Friday before he is scheduled to be deployed for his second tour in Afghanistan on Thursday.
