Md. House to discuss death penalty repeal

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — The Maryland House of Delegates is scheduled to take up a measure to repeal the death penalty.

Delegates are scheduled to consider proposed amendments to the bill on Wednesday. A final vote is expected later this week.

The bill cleared a key hurdle earlier this month when the Senate approved the measure, which has the support of Gov. Martin O'Malley.

If passed, Maryland would become the 18th state to ban the death penalty.

Maryland's death penalty has been on hold since a 2006 court ruling that the state's lethal injection protocols weren't properly approved by a legislative committee.

Maryland has five men on death row. The state's last execution took place in 2005, during the administration of Republican Gov. Robert Ehrlich.
