CUMBERLAND — The Allegany County Health Department has once again sponsored a Create-a-Cup challenge to raise awareness of breast cancer. The contest, which features decorated bras, garnered nine unique entries this year.
“Last year was our first contest, and we had seven entries, which we were very excited about for the first year. This year we have jumped up to nine entries, and have expanded our voting to the health department’s website,” explained Paula McKenzie, director of cancer programs. “The creations are very unique and different with many of them having a very personal story behind it as the inspiration for the creation. We can look at the entries and see how much time and effort was put into each one, and we are honored that each contestant took the time to participate.”
The winner of the 2012 Create-a-Cup contest was Lita Havens of LaVale.
McKenzie said the contest serves as an important method of raising awareness of breast cancer.
“This is a lighthearted way to raise awareness about the seriousness of breast cancer and the importance of screenings, to bring attention to October’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to raise awareness in the community regarding our program and the services we provide to assist women with their screenings, as inability to pay for the screening should not be a barrier to being screened,” she said.
The entries in the 2013 Create-a-Cup have been created in honor of those who have succumbed to breast cancer and to those fighting this disease. Each entry has been crafted using a variety of materials, even duct tape.
“We are proud to honor each and every contestant and their creation, and even though there will be only one first-place winner, we consider each one of them a winner for their efforts,” McKenzie said.
Photographs of each entry, along with a description, have been posted at www.alleganyhealthdept.com. A link is provided to allow you to cast a vote for your favorite Create-a-Cup entry. Voting is open through Friday.
On Oct. 17, the health department will hold an open house and winners will be announced at the event scheduled for 4 to 6 p.m. at the Willowbrook Office Complex.
