Commissioners discuss mental health, grants

CUMBERLAND — Allegany County commissioners recognized Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week among other items at Thursday’s public business meeting at the county office complex on Kelly Road.

Commissioners recognized Sara Phillips-Bennett of the Family Network for her agency’s work ensuring children’s mental health needs are met.

Commissioners agreed to receive funding from the Maryland Department of Business and Economic development  for additional site development at the Barton Business Park.

Amendments to the agreement were needed to modify and extend employment and wages at the site.

A tree planting also became a part of the commission meeting. The county was awarded grant funds from Gov. Martin O’Malley’s stream restoration challenge, said Daniel DeWitt, a county engineer.

The $131,627 grant awarded was larger than expected, DeWitt said.

C&S landscaping was the lowest bidder at $102,918, county officials said. The grant helped plant 24 acres of trees in the county, which will help the county meet its goal of reducing pollutants entering the Chesapeake Bay, DeWitt said.

Local schools were involved in the plantings — about 215 students, DeWitt said.

Jean Ann Bialas spoke on behalf of the Allegany County Conservative Tea Party Caucus.

Bialas said her organization was concerned about the United Nations Agenda 21, which, she said, was a socialist  effort to influence the United States  government and other, local governments.

Bialas accused both President Barack Obama and former president George W. Bush of promoting this agenda.

Bialas asked commissioners if they were aware of any International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives items adopted by the county government. Commissioners said they did not belive they had adopted any of the initiatives.

Commissioners also ap-pointed W. Jay George to a six-year term on the LaVale Sanitary Commission.

Stephen Young was also appointed to represent the county Department of Public Works on the LaVale commission.
